Haila María Mompié González was born on January 28, 1974 in Las Tunas in the eastern part of the country. Dance, music and singing were an important part of her childhood. After studying dance, she began performing in various groups in 1991, and was then hired by a number of Cuban musicals and cabarets. She was then spotted by Jacqueline Castellanos, who got Haila to sing in a són ensemble. A woman of character, she is the first since Celia Cruz to establish herself at the highest level among the elite of new Cuban music.

She first played in the groups Septeto Tradición, Habana Son and Guajira Habanera, and in 1994 joined Bamboleo as the group's lead singer.

Haila began her solo career in 2001. Her first album was released under the guidance of singer and producer Isaac Delgado.Haila once again demonstrated the exceptional talent, drive and passion for music that has made her a star in Cuba. She also took part in various projects by Cuban musicians, on the album “La Rumba Soy Yo”, which was nominated for a Latin Grammy in 2001.

 

Other albums followed, and she took part in several festivals.In April 2004, Haila was honored for her excellent performance at Montreal's “Festivalísimo”, where she became “La Diva of The Cuban Son”.

A sublime voice that ventures into new nuances, accompanied by her orquestra, Haila traverses different musical styles: merengue, pop, bachata, cha cha cha, salsa, all of which highlight her interpretive skills.
